Basic Tips for Welding Stainless Steel

Welding stainless steel or just any kind of steel requires procedures that should be followed to acquire the desired result and to prevent accidents from happening.

It is necessary to be aware of the possible health effects and accidents that you might acquire if you don’t follow the simple safety precautions. Welding stainless steel or any kind of metal produces fumes and toxic gases that is harmful to health. Faulty electric wirings and improper electrical installations can lead to electric shock and death. It is necessary to read the manual and follow the proper directions before operating a welder or other electrical tools.  Work in an open space or in an area with proper ventilation to prevent inhalation of toxic fumes.

It is also necessary to choose the best welding process to use. SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc welding), FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) are the most common welding process used on stainless steel. Choose the welding process that would work best on the type of stainless steel you will be working on.

Selecting a filler metal similar to the properties of the base metal will ensure compatibility and good weld.

Cleaning the base metal before welding will prevent oxide form forming on the metal. Wire brush can do a great job in removing burrs, rust and other oxides on the surface. Removing dirt from the surface will result to a smooth and strong joint.

During welding, it is important to apply the best welding technique that would give you the best results. Ensure that the material is tucked in place and is free from moving. Constant and steady speed must be applied to have uniform weld.
