Basic Tips on Removing Rust Inhibitor from Sheet Metal

Posted on November 6, 2011

Steel sheet metal comes with a rust inhibitor coating to prevent the sheet metal to develop steel soon. If you want to weld this sheet steel product, you will be getting poor results since the rust inhibitor prevents a good welding. You need to remove the coating before you try to weld.

How to remove rust inhibitor:

First, obtain a wire brush. Install the wire brush on the drill. Wire brush is a good tool for removing rust from metal so it will do a good job in removing rust inhibitor coating.

Run the brush on the surface of the sheet metal until the sheet metal turns into a lighter shade of gray meaning that the rust inhibitor is taken off the surface.

Use a red scruff pad to run over the surface of the metal to clear off remaining rust inhibitor. After that, your sheet metal will be ready for welding.
