How to Perform an Aluminium MIG Welding

Posted on October 6, 2011

Like all metal, aluminium is reactive. It can easily conduct electricity and can catch fire easily. That’s why, proper precaution is needed when dealing with Aluminium when welding.

Before deciding to weld, here are some important things to know in performing aluminium MIG welding. What includes in this process is removing the oxide that covers aluminium. The oxide covering of aluminium is responsible for its long life. A stainless steel wire brush can easily remove oxide form the metal.

It is tricky to do aluminium welding. There is a great tendency of boring holes in it when not having a steady hand. More oxide removal must also be done to the metal reverse side. Use a brass heat sink when heating aluminium because brass has higher melting point.

Because of the heat sink, you can now do a neat weld with good penetration. Hold the torch a bit vertically and hold it away from you. Use special cutting or grinding discs to cut aluminium. It is soft that jigsaw blades can be used to cut it. Air grinders can also be used to file aluminium.
